๐ค Who is this for: home gardeners, landscapers, raised-bed builders & lawn care pros.
๐ Understanding Your Results
Cubic Yards โ Standard unit for bulk compost. One cubic yard covers 162 sq ft at 2 inches deep or 108 sq ft at 3 inches deep.
2 cu-ft Bags โ Standard retail bag. For projects over 2 cubic yards, bulk is 40โ60% cheaper.
Cost Estimate โ Based on average US bulk compost prices of $30โ$50 per cubic yard.
How the Compost Calculator Works
Our compost calculator uses a volumetric formula to determine how much compost is needed based on your project area and application depth. Compost improves drainage in clay soils, increases water retention in sandy soils and feeds soil biology.
The Compost Formula
Step 2: Cubic Yards = Cubic Feet รท 27
Step 3: Bags (2 cu ft) = Cubic Feet รท 2 (round up)
Step 4: Add 10% for uneven surfaces and settling
Example: 20ร10 ft garden bed at 3 inches = 200 ร (3รท12) = 50 cu ft = 1.85 cubic yards = 25 bags. Bulk at $38/yard = $70 vs bags $150.
Compost Application Rates by Project
| Application | Depth | 1 Cu Yd Covers |
|---|---|---|
| Lawn top-dressing | 0.5 inch | 648 sq ft |
| Existing garden beds | 2 inches | 162 sq ft |
| New garden beds | 3โ4 inches | 81โ108 sq ft |
| Raised bed fill | 4โ6 inches | 54โ81 sq ft |
๐ Real Project Example
10ร10 ft vegetable garden, 2 inches of compost:
- Area: 100 sq ft
- Volume: 100 ร 0.167 = 16.7 cu ft
- Cubic yards: 16.7 รท 27 = 0.62 โ order 1 cubic yard (minimum bulk delivery)
- Weight: 0.62 ร 1,100 = ~680 lbs โ a pickup bed handles it easily
- Cost check: 1 cubic yard bulk at ~$35 = ~$35 vs ~9 bags of 1.5 cu ft at ~$6 = ~$54
Spread 2โ3 inches and fork it into the top 6 inches of soil. More is not better โ excess compost unbalances soil nutrients.
📚 Sources & Methodology
How we calculate. Step 1: volume in cubic feet = length × width × depth (all in feet). Step 2: cubic yards = cubic feet ÷ 27. Step 3: 2 cu‑ft bags = cubic feet ÷ 2, rounded up. Step 4: we add a 10% allowance for uneven ground and settling.
Cross‑checked. Our coverage math matches Cornell University’s Compost Use Estimator (cubic yards = area in sq ft × depth in inches × 0.0031). Example: a 200 sq ft bed at 3 inches → 1.86 cubic yards by Cornell’s formula, 1.85 by ours. Application depths (1–4 inches by project type) follow university extension guidance for garden beds and lawns.

๐ฐ Mulch vs Compost: Cost Comparison
Mulch and compost are both sold by the cubic yard in bulk and by the bag โ but they do different jobs, so which one is cheaper depends on what your project actually needs. Mulch sits on top of the soil as a protective cover; compost is worked in or spread thin to feed the soil itself. Here is what each typically costs:
| Material | Bulk price per cubic yard | Bagged (2 cu ft) | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Hardwood mulch | $30โ$60 | $3.50โ$6 per bag | Weed suppression, bed cover, paths |
| Compost | $35โ$75 | $4โ$7 per bag | Soil improvement, topdressing, garden beds |
Typical US price ranges โ they vary by region and supplier, so confirm locally before you order.
When mulch is the cheaper choice: if you only need surface coverage โ weed suppression, moisture retention, a clean finished look โ mulch does that job for less per yard, and there is no reason to pay compost prices for a layer that never feeds the roots. Run your beds through the mulch calculator to get the yardage.
When compost earns its higher price: if your soil is tired, sandy, or heavy clay, compost improves the soil itself โ structure, drainage, and nutrients โ so you typically buy less fertilizer later. And the quantity math is simpler than it looks: at a 1-inch layer, both materials need about 0.31 cubic yards per 100 sq ft, so the per-yard price gap in the table above is the whole story.
