How the Sod Calculator Works
Our sod calculator determines your lawn's total square footage, converts it to pallets and estimates material cost based on your selected grass type. The calculator automatically includes a waste factor for edge cuts.
The Sod Formula
Step 2: Pallets = Area ÷ Pallet Coverage (round up)
Step 3: Add 5–10% for cuts and irregular shapes
Step 4: Cost = Area × Price per sq ft
Example: 40×25 ft lawn = 1,000 sq ft. At 450 sq ft/pallet = 2.22 pallets — order 3. At $0.45/sq ft = $450 in materials.

📝 Real Project Example
50×30 ft lawn, rectangle, few obstacles:
- Area: 1,500 sq ft
- Pallets: 1,500 ÷ 450 = 3.33 → order 4 pallets (+10% waste = 3.67)
- Rolls alternative: 1,500 ÷ 10 = 150 rolls of 2×5 ft sod
- Weight: 4 pallets × ~2,000 lbs = ~8,000 lbs (4 tons) — forklift delivery, not a pickup
- Cost check: 1,500 sq ft at ~$0.50 = ~$750 + delivery
Install sod the day it arrives — it heats up and dies on the pallet. A second delivery costs another fee and the color may not match.
📚 Sources & Methodology
How we calculate. Step 1: lawn area in square feet = length × width (break irregular lawns into rectangles). Step 2: pallets = area ÷ 450 (standard pallet coverage), always rounded up. Step 3: rolls = area ÷ 10 (standard 2×5 ft roll). We recommend adding 5–10% extra for cutting around curves, trees and beds.
