How to use

  1. Enter your lawn length and width in feet.
  2. Choose your grass type and describe your lawn's condition.
  3. Hit Calculate Overseeding.

Overseeding formula

Seed (lbs) = (Lawn sq ft รท 1,000) ร— seeding rate ร— condition multiplier. Condition multipliers: thin lawn 1ร—, very thin/patchy 1.5ร—, nearly bare 2ร—.

Example: a 5,000 sq ft tall fescue lawn in thin condition โ†’ (5,000 รท 1,000) ร— 2 ร— 1 = 10 lbs of seed.

๐Ÿ“ Real Project Example

5,000 sq ft thin tall-fescue lawn, fall overseed:

Overseed when nights cool (late August to mid-September for cool-season grass). Spring overseeding fights crabgrass and summer heat โ€” fall wins.

Tips

๐Ÿ“š Sources & Methodology

How we calculate. Step 1: lawn area in square feet. Step 2: seed needed = (area รท 1,000) ร— overseeding rate for your grass (roughly half the new-lawn rate โ€” e.g. tall fescue ~4 lbs, Kentucky bluegrass 1โ€“2 lbs per 1,000 sq ft). Add 10% for thin/bare patches.

Cross-checked. Our half-rate rule and species rates match extension and industry overseeding guides; always follow the rate on your specific seed bag.

Frequently asked questions

When is the best time to overseed my lawn?
Fall for cool-season grasses (fescue, bluegrass, ryegrass) and late spring for warm-season grasses (bermuda, zoysia).
What is the difference between overseeding and planting a new lawn?
Overseeding adds seed to an existing lawn at a lower rate; a new lawn starts from bare soil at the full rate. For bare soil, use our grass seed calculator.
Do I need to aerate before overseeding?
It is not required, but aerating first greatly improves seed-to-soil contact and germination rates.
How much seed do I need for a patchy lawn?
Use the 1.5ร— rate for very thin or patchy areas โ€” for example, 15 lbs instead of 10 lbs on a 5,000 sq ft fescue lawn.
