Yard Size Calculator
Every material estimate starts with one number: how big is your yard? Measure the four sides of your yard โ front, back, left and right โ enter them above, and get the total size in square feet, square yards and acres. Then use that area in any of our material calculators for mulch, topsoil, sod, seed and more.
Real yards are rarely perfect rectangles, so the four-sides mode averages the opposite sides โ the standard lot-size method. If your yard is a triangle, a circle or an L-shape, pick that shape instead.
Measure all four sides of your yard and enter them in the unit you picked above. The calculator averages the opposite sides โ the standard method for real-world yards, and exact when the yard is a perfect rectangle.
Height = the straight-line distance from the base to the opposite corner (perpendicular to the base).
Diameter = the distance straight across the circle through its center.
Picture the L as one big rectangle minus the missing corner. Measure the full outer rectangle, then the missing corner piece.
How to Measure Your Yard
- Measure all four sides with a long tape measure or measuring wheel: front (street side), back, left and right โ in feet or meters, whichever you have; just pick the same unit in the calculator. For a lawn, measure the grass area only โ skip the house, driveway and beds if you are calculating for lawn material.
- Enter the four sides above. The calculator averages front+back and left+right, then multiplies โ exactly how lot sizes are estimated when a yard isn't a perfect rectangle.
- Odd shapes: if one corner is cut off diagonally or the yard is triangular/circular, use the shape modes instead โ or split the yard into simple shapes, run each one, and add the square feet together.
The Formulas
| Shape | Formula | You measure |
|---|---|---|
| Four Sides (most yards) | ((Front + Back) รท 2) ร ((Left + Right) รท 2) | All four sides |
| Rectangle / Square | Length ร Width | Two sides |
| Triangle | (Base ร Height) รท 2 | Base + the perpendicular height |
| Circle | ฯ ร (Diameter รท 2)ยฒ | Straight across the middle |
| L-Shape | (Outer Length ร Outer Width) โ (Cut-out Length ร Cut-out Width) | The full rectangle + the missing corner |
Conversions: square yards = square feet รท 9 ยท acres = square feet รท 43,560.
Worked Example
A real back yard measures front 58 ft, back 62 ft, left 38 ft, right 42 ft. Average width = (58 + 62) รท 2 = 60 ft. Average depth = (38 + 42) รท 2 = 40 ft. Area = 60 ร 40 = 2,400 sq ft โ that's 266.7 sq yd, or 0.06 acres. That one figure is all you need to price sod (about 6 pallets at 400 sq ft each), grass seed, or a 3-inch mulch layer for the beds along its edge.
