Driveway Calculator
Use our free driveway calculator to find out how much gravel or concrete your driveway needs. Switch between gravel and concrete โ the calculator adjusts thickness options, quantities, and cost automatically.
๐ค Who is this for: homeowners, contractors & rural property owners.
How to use
- Enter your driveway length and width in feet.
- Choose Gravel or Concrete โ thickness options and result labels update automatically.
- Hit Calculate Driveway.
Driveway calculator formula
Cubic yards = (Length ร Width ร Thickness in feet) รท 27. Gravel tons = cubic yards ร 1.4; concrete bags = cubic yards ร 45 (80-lb bags).
Example: a 40 ร 12 ft driveway at 6 inches of gravel โ (40 ร 12 ร 0.5) รท 27 = 8.89 cubic yards โ 12.4 tons.
Recommended driveway thickness
| Driveway type | Thickness |
|---|---|
| Gravel driveway | 6 inches (4 inches minimum) |
| Concrete driveway | 4โ6 inches |
๐ Real Project Example
20ร20 ft parking pad, 6 inches of crusher run:
- Area: 400 sq ft
- Volume: 400 ร 0.5 = 200 cu ft
- Cubic yards: 200 รท 27 = 7.4 โ order 8 cubic yards
- Tons: 7.4 ร 1.4 = ~10.4 โ order 11 tons
- Cost check: 11 tons at ~$35/ton = ~$385 + delivery; plan two single-axle loads or one tandem
Build in 3 layers โ 4 in large crushed base, 2 in mid-size, 1โ2 in fines on top โ compacting each. A single thick layer never compacts evenly.
Tips
- Crown the driveway slightly so water runs off to the sides.
- Use edge restraints to keep gravel from spreading.
- Top up gravel driveways every 1โ2 years as it compacts.
๐ Sources & Methodology
How we calculate. Step 1: volume in cubic feet = length ร width ร depth (all in feet). Step 2: cubic yards = cubic feet รท 27. Step 3: tons = cubic yards ร 1.4 (crusher run โ 2,800 lbs per cubic yard). We recommend 4โ6 inches minimum depth and 10โ15% extra for compaction.
Cross-checked. Our density and 3-layer build guidance match published driveway-gravel references; crusher run compacts best because mixed stone sizes lock together.
